Freelance Software Engineer

We are looking for an experienced Software Engineer II to join a high-performing backend engineering organization focused on building and evolving a large-scale attractions and reservations platform. The team is currently working on a strategic migration initiative, platform modernization, and prototyping new service architectures to support future growth.

You will join one of the core backend teams responsible for catalogue, reservations, or connectivity services and contribute to the design, development, and operation of highly scalable distributed systems.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain scalable backend applications using Java
• Drive migration initiatives from on-premises environments to AWS
• Design and implement cloud-native solutions leveraging AWS managed services
• Develop reliable and maintainable services with strong testing practices
• Participate in system design discussions and architectural decisions
• Monitor production systems and improve operational excellence
• Own services end-to-end, including deployment, monitoring, and incident resolution
• Collaborate with Product Managers, Engineers, and stakeholders to deliver business value
• Continuously improve system reliability, performance, and maintainability
• Contribute to technical documentation, operational procedures, and best practices

Required Skills

• 5+ years of software engineering experience
• Strong Java development experience
• Extensive AWS experience
• Proven experience with on-premises to AWS cloud migrations
• Hands-on experience with Kafka
• Hands-on experience with Cassandra
• Experience with AWS managed services such as DynamoDB, RDS, and Lambda
• Strong understanding of monitoring, alerting, observability, and operational excellence
• System design experience
• Excellent communication skills
• High accountability and ability to work autonomously

Nice to Have

• TypeScript or JavaScript experience
• Experience within Attractions, Ticketing, Travel, Reservations, or Marketplace environments
• Greenfield architecture and product design experience
